ON THE RECORD: Nassau County officials cracking down on drunk driving this summer season

SA: Robert Gibson from Hampton New Jersey has been to Normandy three times

RG: I'm very fortunate at 100 years old I'm still able to go back 

SA: Back for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. In 1944 he says the boat ride to France was 

RG: Rough, l-s-t in the English channel. All our equipment was in there too 

SA: Gibson was part of an army artillery unit. The second wave to hit Utah Beach 

RG: We were scared, we didn't know what was going - what we were gonna put up with. We had a job to do and we were told you had to do it or get the hell back on the boat

SA: He says German machine guns were relentless

RG: The Germans had a pill box and they could sight everybody getting off whatever ship they were on or whatever they were in and we lost an awful lot of young fellas that never even hit the beach. 

SA: After Normandy Gibson passed through a liberated Paris

RG: Everybody, right along the streets as we come into Paris they were loaded 

SA: He endured the battle of the bulge 

RG: You didn't get very deep in a fox hole because the ground was so hard. You laid on top of the ground and throw snow on top of you

SA: Eventually he made it back to Hampton, he served as Fire Chief and mayor. Robert Gibson was born at home, no birth certificate. Politicians had to pull strings to get him a passport so he could return to France. He says it's emotional seeing the grave markers. 

RG: It really hurts, it really does because some of them were our friends 

SA: For Gibson it is a solemn obligation to go back 

RG: We had an awful lot in this country to be proud of

DIFFERENCE MAKER: 100-year-old D-Day survivor on the 80th anniversary

Across the country we're seeing transit hubs enjoying a renaissance with dilapidated stations being reenergized. We've seen the extraordinary improvements at Grand Central Station followed by the addition of Moynihan Train Hall. They've become more than just places to catch a train, they're also places to eat, drink, and shop. Now eyes are on the tired outdate 73-year-old Port Authority Bus Terminal. Transforming it into a state of the art transit hub with much improved retail and a 3.5 acre green space. There's a 10 billion dollar proposal in the works to transform the world's busiest bus terminal that serves more than 70 million customers each year. It will be a great day when one can enter New York City through a world class terminal and beautiful civic space. Before you get too excited the expected completion date is 2032, it can't come soon enough. I'm Rob Walsh for the Business Spotlight on WCBS 880 News.
