DIFFERENCE MAKER: National EMS Memorial Bike Ride

View descriptionShare

SA: Bagpipes greeted close to 100 paramedics and EMTs as they rolled into Westchester. No ambulances though, they were on two wheels. The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride, Boston to D.C.

BR: Our goal is to assist the families of EMS people that have died both in the line of duty and off-duty and to raise some money for their families and to just bring public awareness to the fact that line of duty death in EMS is actually a real thing. I believe we are up to 36 line of duty deaths that we're riding for this year

SA: Paramedic Bill Rothschild

BR: We're still losing people from Covid and from September 11th disease as well as the other causes, ambulances that are in crashes. You guys recently did a story about the EMT in the city that was stabbed eight times. Unfortunately getting struck by cars at the scene of accidents is probably one of our largest single causes

SA: EMT Jean Pollack from Yorktown Heights wears a necklace loaded with dog tags for those who have been lost

GP: We get a set of two, we try to find the family of the person for whom we're riding in memory of and give them the dog tag but we keep one always and wear it year after year

SA: When you're in trouble, first responders are there. Bill Rothschild says please return the favor, keep them in mind

BR: Slow down, pay attention, stop texting, eyes open. Driving is a full time, full engagement responsibility

SA: Put down the phone

BR: Yeah please, please. That would probably be it, that probably is what caused the accident in the first place
