DIFFERENCE MAKERS: Pamplemousse

View descriptionShare

SA: Steaming hot coffee and tasty pastries at the Pamplemousse Project in White Plains. But this is not your typical cafe.

GK: We're a little special in that all our profits do go to charity.

SA: Owners Gary and Lydia Kris don't make a penny. They got the idea during Covid while volunteering at a food bank.

GK: seeing people in line that we knew was, sort of shook us to the core to some extent. We thought "Is there something we can do to give back to the community?" We were both business people and we thought, "Well what if we do a business like Newman's Own?"

SA: After they pay the bills, the profits go to local charities.

GK: So once a quarter we report to our loyalty customers how much did the cafe make. "Here's all the organizations that applied for grants on our website. Here's what they want the money for. You decide where it goes."

SA: They also use the cafe as a community gathering space and for education.

GK: We run a year-long entrepreneurship class in the White Plains public school system and use the cafe as a real-life example of how this all works. We do a lot of programming with the White Plains Youth Bureau -- financial literacy program, job training skills, those kinds of things.

SA: The hope is to pay it forward.

GK: When we originally came up with the idea, we were like "Is this something that is replicable? Can we do this in other communities that are diverse, that are wonderful communities but that have significant needs?"

SA: In White Plains, Sean Adams, WCBS 880 News.
