NSW rural Liberal MP Sussan Ley has announced intentions to introduce a new Private Members Bill, which would call for the phasing out of the live animal exports industry.

But Senator David Leyonhjelm isn’t happy with the proposal, deciding to respond by running a Liberal Democrats candidate in Ms Ley’s Farrar seat.

“ We’re seeing Sussan Ley and various other nutcases say all of those people, who did all that work and have all that investment in the industry, are now going to be put out of business because some people didn’t do the right thing.”

“It is absolutely wrong,” says the Senator.

The Senator says it is important to steer clear of penalising the many for the transgressions of the few, noting that a complete eradication of the industry is a disproportionate, kneejerk reaction.  

 “What we should be doing is identifying those who are letting the side down. We have to get rid of these bad apples. They are bringing the industry into disrepute.”

“But to close down the entire industry because of those bad apples, that’s collective punishment, which has a very bad history.”

The Senator opposed calls for Australia to vacate the live export industry space, saying that allowing other nations to handle the transportation of livestock could worsen the animal’s plight.

“Those other countries that compete with Australia for those live export markets don’t have our standards. The best thing for animals overall is for us to keep exporting and get rid of those who are responsible for the bad behaviour.”
