Dawn Fraser remembers the 1956 Melbourne Olympics

View descriptionShare

On the anniversary of the opening for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, Michael is joined by Dawn Fraser AO, MBE, who is the first of only three swimmers in Olympic history (Krisztina, Egerszegi of Hungary & Michael Phelps of the United States being the two others) to have won individual gold medals for the same event at three successive Olympics (100 metres freestyle - 1956, 1960 & 1964).

The 1956 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, was held in Melbourne from 22 November to 8 December 1956, with the exception of the equestrian events, which were held in Stockholm, Sweden in June 1956.

These Games were the first to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere and Oceania, as well as the first to be held outside Europe and North America.... with Melbourne being the most southerly city ever to host the Olympics.
