Senator Cory Bernardi has written to the federal Energy Minister, asking him to remove the moratorium on nuclear energy.

The Australian Conservatives leader has asked Angus Taylor to support his bill to lift the blanket ban on nuclear. With 40% of the world’s uranium resources resides in Australia, Bernardi says the government would be “mad” to not pursue the power option. 

“I wrote to Angus Taylor basically saying if you’re really technology neutral in your quest for lower power prices, you’ve got to support my bill to lift the moratorium or the ban on nuclear energy in this country,” he tells Luke Grant.  

“Twenty years ago the parliament endorsed the greens complete ban on even having the conversation about nuclear energy. If we lift that, then if nuclear stacks up economically and environmentally, if we can find a place for it and get all the safeguard and approval processes in place, at least it's an option (we can talk about).”

Bernardi adds that the Morrison Government needs to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, to show that they have fully liberated themselves from Turnbull’s energy agenda.

“It’s a symbolic gesture that shows they’re setting out on a new path of Australian sovereignty to make sure every business, family, pensioner and household can afford to turn on the lights."
