Perhaps Australians become more trusting around the festive season or perhaps scammers have a budget to reach, but whatever the reason, December always generates a spike in thieves trying to imitate the ATO.

Tax Expert, Ross Forrester, reveals four simple checks and strategies that will help you stay safe this holiday season.

1.   We need your tax file number. If somebody calls you asking for your tax file number, don’t give it to them.

2.   Threatened with jail. You will never be threatened with a jail sentence on the first correspondence with the ATO.

3.   You must pay in iTunes, Google Play or Bitcoin. The ATO does not accept payment in any of these forms.

4.   You must pay immediately. A scammer will do anything they can to keep you on the phone while you transfer the money to them and to stop you from seeking advice.
