The NSW government will set aside $47 million to help keep the NSW recycling industry afloat, as it tackles China’s clampdown on imported recylable waste.

China has long been the largest destination for Australia’s recyclable exports, taking in more than a third of all plastics collected here.  But Beijing’s so-called “China National Sword” policy effectively places a draconian trade ban on these "contaminated materials." 

This has left many recycling systems across the western world in an uncertain position, as they reconsider where recyclables will be sent.

Meanwhile the Queensland government will reintroduce a levy on “unscrupulous operators,” as it looks to stop the state from becoming a de facto dumping ground for commercial waste.

 Tony Khoury from the Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association of NSW joined Luke Grant to discuss the recycling issues.
