Luis Reyes on the importance of Taos grown leaders, Kit Carson Electric's new solar array in Amalia, and the future of hydrogen energy.

This month on Voices of Taos, reporter and copy editor Emily Sender sits down for a conversation with Joella Ann Montoya, executive director of Community Against Violence (CAV).

CAV serves an area of 27,000 square miles across seven counties, and approximately 200 people per year engage with their services. Joella and Emily talk about different types of abuse, as well as Montoya’s hopes for how the organization can help lessen the stigma of seeking support and affect cultural changes around how people talk about and recognize abuse.

In addition to their emergency shelter and the CAV Thrift Store, the organization offers a wide array of services, including education for law enforcement, violence prevention and sexual education classes for students, legal and special population advocates, as well as an intervention program for offenders and a men’s program to help teach young men in the community about emotional intelligence.

After purchasing the old El Taoseño building four years ago, Domito thought about how she could not only drive more customer traffic to the new location, but also how she could bring the community together. Mary’s Place has become a popular performance space in addition to being a furniture store. 

Lynne and Mary talk about what led to choosing the Sagebrush Inn as the venue for the upcoming show, as well as for the very successful Pablo Cruise show earlier this year.

This week on Voices of Taos, reporter Olivia Lewis talks with suicide prevention advocate and speaker Kevin Hines.

Hines became a public speaker and mental health advocate after surviving a suicide attempt on the Golden Gate Bridge. He subsequently campaigned to have safety nets installed on the bridge, which was completed in 2023.

Kevin discusses what led him to attempt suicide, and how that experience has motivated his work since then. Hines and Lewis also discuss the campaign to add railings to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge after seven people took their lives there last year, as well as the launch of a new suicide prevention app co-designed by teens in Taos.
