Review of the Interview with Harry Henry Wallace
On Voices@Alive we had the privilege of launching Within and Without, the debut novel by Sydney author Harry Henry Wallace.
Harry spoke with honesty and warmth about the inspiration behind this powerful coming-of-age story, set against the backdrop of summer 1986. We explored the journey of Ruben, a teenager caught between his Chilean roots and Australian life, whose fateful summer leads him into forbidden love, family conflict, and ultimately a profound spiritual awakening.
During the interview, Harry reflected on his own journey as a writer — how family, heritage, and life experience shaped his voice. He shared how the themes of love, destiny, and identity are not only central to his novel but also part of his personal philosophy: that life is both the path we choose and the path chosen for us.
It was an inspiring conversation that reminded us how literature can bridge cultures, spark reflection, and give voice to experiences of belonging and loss that many of us carry within.
Within and Without is more than a novel; it is Harry’s gift to readers who are searching for meaning in the spaces between family, culture, and fate.
