This week's PODCAST with Mario Corena & ''Vogliamoci Bene'', we will welcome in Studio Sanremo special guest, Etty Garabelli from ARA(Australian Refugee Association).

Etty was born in Uruguay but grew up in Peru, and has lived in Australia since 1999.

Etty is the Project Officer for Communities for Change Plus and the New Arrivals Wellbeing Program at the Australian Refugee Association (ARA) and also works as a Counsellor / Case Manager at PEACE multicultural Services Relationships Australia with a focus on Mental health, settlement, FDV, Blood borne virus & Gambling problems.She has been working with Culturally and Linguistically diverse communities for the past 6 years. Her lived experience inform her work and strengthens her commitment to continuously educate, empower and advocate for the different communities that call Australia home.

In this Podcast we would like to mainly focus on the project she oversees at the Australian Refugee Association.

The program is called Communities for Change Plus, which is a model that trains community representatives / leaders from different CALD(Culturally And Linguistic Diverse) communities about Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) and supports them to deliver information sessions to their communities based on what they tell them what is best as they are the experts of their own community.Today in the interview we will discuss the effects of abuse, how some can be long term, especially with a focus on the children involved, as not many services are available once the crisis has passed, and how as a community it can work together to be more informed and create safe environments and communities that support the recovery of the victims / survivors of FDV (Family and Domestic Violence).

I am sure that you have noticed that when this happens to someone we know and care about, most of us want to help but we don’t really know how and sometimes can end up saying or doing things that actually create more pain, confusion or even risk to the person escaping violence.
