Vogliamoci Bene - Mark Le Messurier - 6th May 2023This week's PODCAST with Mario Corena & ''Vogliamoci Bene'', we will welcome in Studio Sanremo special guest Mark Le Messurier(2022 Senior South Australian of the Year).
Mark Le Messurier is a teacher, counsellor, public speaker, and the author of 16 publications over past years.
First up, Mark lives in Adelaide, and is married to Sharon.
They have two daughters, Kim and Noni, adopted from South Korea.
Kim is the eldest and is a research scientist working at St Jude’s Hospital in Memphis.
She is married to Ayman and they have 3 beautiful kids – Tarik, Rami and Lia.
Noni is their youngest and has a black kelpie-cross called Gryff. He is the love of her life.
Noni and Mark share the same space, and run their own counselling practices, at Wayville.
Their work also overlaps as Noni works directly with Mark as a co-facilitator of his ‘What’s the Buzz?’ friendship groups.
“What’s the Buzz?’ was created by Mark and his dear friend, Madhavi Nawana Parker to bring kids, teens, and young adults together to feel the power of friendship and learn the social and emotional code.
And, 11 years on, ‘What’s the Buzz?’ is an evidence-based program used daily in more than 90 countries, in hundreds of schools world-wide, by hundreds of mental health practitioners, and in hundreds of community-based groups.
Thousands of vulnerable young people have found, and continue to find, connection, friendship, purpose, and skill development through this simple, neuro affirming program.
Mark and Sharon have three very loved whippets - Maxi, Luca and Kelvin. They are DELTA THERAPY DOGS and used to regularly visit an aged care and dementia centre. They are recently retired.
He works in private practice as a mentor to young people, a coach to parents, and a teacher educator.
He’s often invited as a critical friend into schools who want to develop this deeper humane ethos.
Mark regularly presents at conferences for universities, schools, for parent organisations, corporations, and interested groups throughout Australia and further afield.
He is the recipient of the Australia Day Council's 2022 Senior South Australian of the Year award. His generosity and consideration for others was recognised as profound, far reaching, life changing and lifesaving for many over the years.
He's helped many families and has improved the self-worth and life outcomes of kids, adolescents, parents, and educators.
What summarizes Mark’s mission is written in his book, TEACHING VALUES of BEING HUMAN. He writes -
Now it's our turn to be the adults. It’s our turn to hold the baton. And our children... well, they're just that... they are children, and they are relying on us. Their brains, bodies, and spirit are in the process of precious construction. The atoms which merged to make them who they are did so like never before, and will never do so again. There will never be another of them anywhere in the universe. We want them to rejoice in their humanness, and know they are so much more than enough. This is their birthright and our responsibility.
His passion is inspired by the hurt and confusion young people feel as they face unexpected, unfair, and unkind challenges in life.
The books and programs he's written illustrate his wild drive to share his understandings about young human beings with their significant others, namely their parents and educators.
In this powerful PODCAST we ask Mark the following :
So, where did all this start, Mark? Were you a high achiever at school? Did you have ambitions to make the world a better place?
Can you identify key moments that led you to support kids and families in the way you have?
Why have you written so prolifically? Why 16 books over 20 years, let alone articles and papers?
Congratulations on being the recipient of Senior South Australian of the Year 2022. How has that been?
As Senior South Australian of the Year 2022 what were you able to achieve with the platform?
You mentioned that our understandings about neurodiversity are undergoing huge and rapid changes. Could you talk to this and tease out?
Can you share a little about your, ‘What’s the Buzz?’ programs? I understand they are now being used in more than 90 countries, is that right?
And, what about your latest book, ‘Guiding Kids Through the Tough Moments’? It’s an interesting title. Can you expand?
What values drive you?
I’m interested in your loves and motivations in life, besides Sharon, your girls and the 3 whippets? What do you cherish? What keeps you going?
Do you have something that might surprise us?
