The influenza virus, also known as flu, is around in our community.

Influenza can be serious for pregnant women and their baby. Even if you are healthy, changes in your immune, heart and lung functions during pregnancy mean you are more likely to get really sick from flu. Pregnant women who get the flu are at higher risk of hospitalization, and even death.

If you are pregnant, you are strongly encouraged to get the flu vaccine. It is safe and can be given at any stage of pregnancy.

Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to protect you from the flu and its complications during pregnancy.

The flu vaccine triggers your body's defence system to create antibodies, which will fight flu viruses if you are exposed to them in the future.

A flu shot also protects your baby against influenza during the first six months of life because protective antibodies are passed from the mother to the baby during pregnancy.

The flu vaccine is free for all pregnant women and is available from your doctor, midwife, or pharmacist.

Some providers may charge an administration or consultation fee. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if this applies to you.

It is recommended that people you regularly see while pregnant also get a flu shot, such as your family and those you live with. This will help protect you from the flu.

Speak to your doctor, midwife or pharmacist today. Now is the best time to get vaccinated and protect yourself and your baby against flu.
