The Waterloo-based Dragonflyers, a dragon boat team made up entirely of breast cancer survivors, is heading to France to compete in an international competition alongside 4,500 survivors from 25 countries.
The team includes 24 paddlers from across Waterloo Region and surrounding communities, ranging in age from 28 to 77. After raising more than $15,000 through local fundraisers, the team has now raised another $23,000+ online to help cover travel and competition costs.
The Dragonflyers say dragon boating has helped them rebuild strength, improve mobility and mental health, and show others that there can be a fulfilling life after cancer.
