View descriptionShare

In this episode of Vinyl Vibes, Jack is joined by Charlie McCoy, a legendary nashville session musician who has been in the music field since in the late 1950s. Charlie began his musical journey when in 1949, at the age of 8 he bought his first harmonica for 50 cents out of a comic book. He has been playing the instrument for over 74 years. After trying to make it as a performer, Charlie discovered it was session work that would be his calling after witnessing the recording process of Brenda Lee's 1959 hit "Sweet Nothin's". Charlie's big break as a session musician came in 1961 when he played harmonica on Roy Orbison's "Candy Man", a top 40 hit. Throughout the 1960s Charlie would play with the likes of Bob Dylan on albums such as Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde, he would play on 13 albums by Elvis, and played bass harmonica on Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer". Charlie has released a total of 46 solo studio albums with his most recent being 2022's "Charlie Goes Brazil". He also received a Grammy in 1972 for his solo album "The Real McCoy" making Charlie a well established solo musician in his own right. In 2017 Charlies released his autobiography: Fifty Cents and a Box Top: The Creative Life of Nashville Session Musician Charlie McCoy.

Jack Zoomed Charlie to discuss his early musical beginnings, how he came to to get his first harmonica, his early music work in the late 1950s, the "Sweet Nothin's" recording session, his memories of recording with Roy Orbison, playing lead guitar on Bob Dylan's Desolation Row and trumpet on "Rainy Day Woman", his memories of recording with Elvis, what his thoughts are on the new Elvis movie, his recording work with Paul Simon, his solo albums and his new album "Charlie Goes Brazil".

“Elvis walked in the door, he went right up to everyone and shook our hands and said "Thank you for helping me" and that kind of set the mood you know, alright -this guy's alright - he's very cool -and after that movie track, Scotty (Moore) talked him into keeping me..and I ended up on thirteen albums with him" - Charlie on this episode of vinyl talking about recording with Elvis for the first time on his soundtrack Harum Scarum
