Tim formed his first music group, the Railroaders, when he was 16 in 1964. Attending Hampton Grammar School, he soon met guitarist, Brian May and joined May's group "1984". In 1968, the group would disband and Tim and Brian would form "Smile". They were soon joined by drummer, Roger Taylor. The band would record six song together including "Doin' Alright". This song, penned by Tim and Brian, would be featured on Queen's 1973 debut studio album. Tim would leave Smile in 1970 and Brian and Roger would go on to form Queen. Tim left the music industry in the mid '70s to work as a model maker. He would return to music in the new millennium and to date, has recorded three studio albums including his new 2023 album "Wayward Child".

In Jack's interview with Tim Staffell, he discusses with Tim his childhood in post-war Britain, the impact of American blues music on British youth at the time, his work with the Railroaders, how he came to meet Brian May, his memories of playing alongside Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, how Smile formed, the writing of Smile song "Earth" and "Doin' Alright", what it was like recording in the '60s, why he left Smile, what he thought of Queen's early records, his music work since the 2000s, and his new album "Wayward Child".

“I knew Freddie (Mercury) would step in. It wasn't that he was critical of my role in Smile, its just that I think he thought that I wasn't making the best of it because I wasn't a performer, and he knew damn right that he was . . . he kinda thought I was doing theme a disservice by not being a more upfront performer, and he was absolutely right." - Tim Staffell on this episode of Vinyl Vibes
