Rick Buckler Interview - Drummer of The Jam

View descriptionShare

In this episode of Vinyl Vibes, Jack is joined by Rick Buckler drummer of The Jam. Rick grew up in a working class family and so few records were owned by the family. Radio and album swapping at school is what exposed Rick to music in his early days. This included music such as The Kinks and Jimi Hendrix. The Jam formed in 1972 and during it's hit days consisted of Paul Weller on vocals/guitar, Bruce Foxton on bass and Rick on drums. The group recorded their first album "In the City" in 1977 and would over the next five years have four number one singles and four top ten albums in the UK. The group are best known for their songs such as "That's Entertainment" and "Town Called Malice". Today Rick writes on his time in the band in his books such as "The Jam: 1982" and "That's Entertainment: My Life in The Jam". He is also currently doing an Q&A tour around the UK in support of his most recent book.

Jack zoomed Rick to discuss his early musical beginnings, growing up in a working class family, the impact that the likes of The Kinks and Jimi Hendrix had on him growing up, the formation of The Jam, seeing the Sex Pistols for the first time, the group's 1977 tour of the USA, the recording of their album In The City, their song English Rose, the focus on their music for their fourth album Setting Sons, the break up of the band in 1982, Rick's new book "The Jam: 1982", and his current Q&A tour around the UK.

"When it came to putting songs together, they came together quite quickly or not at all. If something wasn't working we'd know straight away that it wasn't working...we'd made this sort of effort that each album was going to be different to the last one, we didn't really want to rest on our morals and do the same old same old."  - Rick Buckler on this episode of vinyl vibes
