Dick Peterson Interview - Drummer of The Kingsmen

View descriptionShare

In this episode of Vinyl Vibes, Jack interviews Dick Peterson, Drummer of The Kingsmen. Dick joined the Kingsmen in December 1963 and has been playing with them ever since. He joined the group just as their single "Louie, Louie" was becoming a major hit across the United States. Although not on the group's famous recording of  "Louie, Louie", he experienced being in the group at the hight of the group's success. Dick played drums on some of the other group's tracks such as the group's hit "The Jolly Green Giant" (Number 4 in US and Number 1 in Canada) and "Annie Fanny" (Number 43 in US and Number 13 in Canada).

The group continued to have success till the later part of the 1960s when the psychedelic era began, however the group made a comeback after the 1978 film "Animal House" featured "Louie, Louie" on it's soundtrack. Today, Dick is the last member from the group's heyday still playing live with The Kingsmen. In 2005 Dick wrote his autobiography called LOUIE LOUIE Me Gotta Go Now.

In Jack's interview with Dick Peterson he talks with Dick about his early musical beginnings, how he came to love music, how he came to be a part of The Kingsmen, the story of "Louie Louie", the group's success in the early 60's, the FBI investigation into "Louie, Louie",  the group's tour with The Beach Boys in 1964, the band's song "The Jolly Green Giant", the passing of Mike Mitchell, Dick's solo albums, and Dick's book on the band.

“When I got into my senior year, "Louie, Louie" had been recorded, and before my senior year was over, we were one of the hottest bands in the United States of America."  - Dick Peterson on this episode of Vinyl Vibes
