Bernal was drafted by the Army in 1969 and served through 1970. He graduated from basic training and spent time as a member of combined reconnaissance, gathering intel on the opponent's platoon. He was awarded a bronze star for being part of the Cambodia invasion and making it out alive after 35 days.
After his time with the Army, he moved home to work on his farm.
