Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN

Dennis Schumacher // US Navy // US Navy Reserve // ACTIVE DUTY RANK // E-7 Dennis was raised in Zeeland, North Dakota and now resides in Fargo. He joined the Navy, where he served from June 1968 through May 1970. After graduating basic training in Gulfport, Mississippi, he was assigned to the NMCB-58 in Davisville, Rhode Island. Dennis was a heavy duty construction mechanic, repairing all types of cranes and earth-moving equipment. After the my active duty service, he became a civilian sailor, and went to work as a diesel tech for Cummins Diesel Sales and Service in Fargo while also partaking in the Navy Reserve for another 20 years. Dennis is now retired from both the military and my civilian work. He is a member of the West Fargo VFW, Harwood American Legion, Fargo DAV, and the VVA.

Lee Otos // US Army // SGT Lee enlisted in the Army and began his service in August 1968, staying in until August 1971. After his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, he worked in communications while stationed in Germany. Earning his Sergeant rank was a huge accomplishment for him. After the Army, he moved back to North Dakota and worked in trucking for 35 years before ultimately retiring.  Lee is a member of the West Fargo VFW and the Fargo American Legion.

James “Jim” Kloehn // US Army // E-4 Jim was drafted and off to the Army in 1971, serving through 1973. After completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he became part of Co. A, 1-66 Armored (General Patton’s Original Battalion!) at Fort Hood, Texas. He worked as the BC’s driver and was very proud to have also helped some of the guys out in emergencies that the company commanders couldn’t. After his discharge, he spent 43 years working at the BAE research and development defense contractor in the Twin Cities. After retiring, he has been working on the family farm with his  twin brother, John. He is a member of the American Legion in Alexandria. ________________ John Kloehn // US Army // E-4 John was drafted by the Army and served from August 1967 through December 1968. He completed basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and then was assigned to the 25th Infantry Div., 4/9. He was an infantryman and saw most of his time in Germany (three months) and Vietnam (seven months). In May 1968, his unit was on a reconnaissance mission near the Cambodian border when they were ambushed. John was the only one to survive and sustained multiple injuries. He was given a Purple Heart from Gen. James Woolnough. After my time in the Army, he moved back to Minnesota and worked on his family’s farm. He has yet to retire and loves working outside. John is a a 55+ year member of American Legion Post 87 and VVA Chapter 235 in Alexandria.

LuDean C. Bruer // US Army // CPL LuDean joined the Army in February 1952 and served through February 1954. After graduating from basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he worked as a driver for the for the colonel, big truck and Jeep maintainer, driver’s training instructor, and regimental dispatcher with HHC 28th Inf. Div. 112th Reg. He saw time at Fort Heilbronn, Germany. Colonel Robertson was a father-figure to LuDean and is proud he was able to drive him around so much. After his discharge, he moved back to Minnesota and went directly into farming. LeDean is a member of the Morris VFW, served in many capacities at his church, was on the township board for 20 years and also served on the cemetery and Alberta Area Development Board. He is also a member of the Rural Ag Development Group.

Georgia joined the Army as part of the student nurse program and began serving in 1965. She graduated the program at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in 1967 and then was part of the Army Nurse Corps. She saw time at Fort Riley, Kansas; Quinhon, Vietnam; Fort Ord, California; and Missouri. Georgia was a Registered Nurse and worked in orthopedics, emergency, and intensive care. Before her military time was through, she became a supervisor. She really enjoyed when they could treat the local children. Georgia hung up her boots for good in 1975.  After the Army, she continued working as an RN for 50 years between MO, AK, MN, and WA. She was the Head ICE Nurse, Nurse Educator, Flight Nurse, and worked in public health.  She volunteered for the Sitka Fire Department in AK and Medical Reserve Corps in WA. 

Oliver “Ollie” Huseby, Jr. // US Army // E-5 He calls the Fargo area home after having grown up in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Oliver began his Army career in June 1967. After completing basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, he was assigned to the 76th Eng. in Korea. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic. His fondest memory of serving was seeing the USS Pueblo crew being released after their near-year of captivity. Upon his discharge, he moved back to the Upper Midwest and continued in a similar line of work – automotive machinist. He now enjoys his retirement.

Robert “Bob” Bergman // US Army // SP4 Bob began his Army service in November 1968 after being drafted. He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was then promptly sent to Vietnam where he linked up with the 1st Cavalry as an artillery gunner. Bob made a lot of great relationships with his fellow comrades and is so thankful for all of them. His time in the military ended in February 1970. After the Army, he moved back to the Upper Midwest and went into farming.  Bob is a life member of both the American Legion and VFW.

Tank McNamara had a chance to visit with Jerry on their first stop at the The National Museum of the United States Army.  Gerald W. “Jerry” Anderson US Army E-5 I was born and raised in New York Mills, Minnesota and still call the area home today. I was drafted by the Army and served for two years (1970 through 1972). After graduating from basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, I was assigned to Bravo Btry, 3rd of the 82nd, 396th Infantry Brigade. I was an artillery section chief and saw most of my Army time stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam. Earning a Bronze Star and the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Week were real highlights for me. After my active duty service, I returned to the Upper Midwest and worked as a mechanic, later in insurance sales, and finally in manufacturing. I’ve been retired for several years, now. I am extremely proud of my four wonderful children and 14 incredible grandchildren. I am a member of VFW Post 3289.

Tank McNamara visited with Curt and his son Kyle who is currently serving at the National Museum of the United States Army.   Curtis F. “Curt” Knutson US Army / North Dakota National Guard E-5 / E-8 I grew up in Alby, Minnesota, and am proud to now call the Fargo, North Dakota area home. I joined the Army and served from 1969 through 1971. I was stationed with B-5 46th Engineers, but also spent a year in service in Vietnam. After my time in the Army, I continued to serve with the Happy Hooligans based in Fargo, North Dakota. I retired as an E-8 after a full career. During my days as a civilian soldier, I also farmed for many years. I’m now also retired from civilian work. My terrific wife, Tammy, and I were married in 1978. We proudly raised three wonderful boys who have given us 12 incredible grandchildren. In December 2020, I lost my dear Tammy to COVID-19 and miss her terribly.  

Tank McNamara had a chance to visit with Roger Lomstrom at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial on day 2 of the Honor Flight.  Roger F. Lomstrom US Army SP5 I grew up in Zim, Minnesota. I now call Henning home. I was drafted by the Army and served from 1965 through 1967 and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and specialized training at Camp Zama, Japan. I was a medic, taking care of the wounded coming out of Vietnam.  Earning a letter of Commendation during the Tet Offensive and promoting to SP5 in record time were both very proud moments for me.   After my time in the Army, I drove over-the-road trucks for 14 years, then went back to college, earned my RN degree, and then went into the medical field to take care of patients. I married my sweet wife, Sandy, as soon as I got my orders for Japan. It was the smartest thing I ever did! I also have a brother who served in the 101st Airborne and nearly was killed after I discharged. I am a ride captain in the Patriot Guard Riders, Alexandria chapter.

Tank McNamara had a chance to visit with Larry Steckler and his son Scott, who is a military veteran as well at the World War II Memorial on day 2 of the Veterans Honor Flight.   Hilary L. “Larry” Steckler US Navy MM3 I grew up in Valley City, North Dakota and am proud to still call the area home. I volunteered for the Navy and served from November 1963 through November 1967. After completing basic training in San Diego, California, I was stationed aboard the USS Constellation CVA-64. I worked as a machinist’s mate, making liquid oxygen and nitrogen,  and manning the deck edge elevators. I was very proud to serve my country. After the Navy, I moved back to my hometown and began working as a farmer and truck driver. Now retired but sure enjoyed the work I did for so many years. In 1966 my incredible wife, Irene, and I got hitched. Our three children have made us endlessly proud over the years. We are the proud grandparents of eight wonderful children and two greats. I really enjoy boating, fishing, and playing pinochle. I am a member of the American Legion.

Tank McNamara had the opportunity to visit with Richard A. Deschene at the World War II Memorial on day 2 of the Veterans Honor Flight.  Richard A. Deschene US Army CPL Argyle, Minnesota is where I come from and where I’m proud to still call home. I was drafted by the Army and began my service in January 1952. After graduating from basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, I spent time with the 65th AMD in Korea. I worked as a light duty mechanic on Jeeps and 2.5-ton trucks, was a Jeep driver and became a supply clerk in the motor pool. Receiving Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation were all very proud moments for me. My time in the military came to an end in December 1953. After the Army I farmed in the spring, summer, and fall. During the winter months, I worked for American Crystal Sugar. My lovely wife, Lorraine, and I got married in 1951. We raised five children who gave us our promotion to grandparents four times. We are also great-grandparents to many. I come from a very militarily-involved family … six of my brothers and I all served as young men. I am a member of the Argyle American Legion.

Tank McNamara had the honor to walk with Terry along the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on day 2 of the Veterans Honors Flight.  The two sat down after the walk just outside the Lincoln Memorial.   Terrance L. “Terry” Teiken US Army E-5 I was born and raised in Ogema, Minnesota and happily call the Detroit Lakes area home today. I was drafted by the Army and in November 1970, I was off for basic training. Upon completion at Fort Lewis, Washington, I was then assigned to the 269th Signal Group, working in crypto-secure communications in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. Serving my country and earning an honorable discharge were my two favorite accomplishments. Upon my discharge in November 1971, I went to work as a high school teacher, coach, and eventual athletic director. My beauty, Jeanne, and I were married in 1975. We have raised an incredible daughter and now have two wonderful grandchildren. I love spending time with my family the most. I am a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

Tank McNamara and Jerry, two familiar faces, walked through the National Archives Research Center together, reflecting on Jerry’s military service and discussing the Veterans Honor Flight   Gerald O. “Jerry” Anderson US Marine Corps CPL I grew up in Farwell, Minnesota, and now call Dilworth home. I joined the Marines and served from October 1968 through May 1970. After graduating from basic training in San Diego, California, I was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines as an operations chief of a 3.2 mortar battery. We were based out of San Diego and saw time in Southern Vietnam, I was very proud to serve my country. Very proud. After my discharge, I went to work for Flint Advertising in Fargo, North Dakota. I worked there for many years before then moving on to other career opportunities. I am now retired. My wonderful wife, Jane, and I married in 1967. We have two incredible children who have blessed us with four grandchildren. I love watching them participate in their activities. It brings me such joy. I am a member of American Legion Post 21 in Moorhead.

It takes an incredible team to make an Honor Flight possible, and this trip was no exception. From bus captains and medical staff to respiratory therapists, wheelchair assistants, and stair helpers, every volunteer played a vital role in creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our veterans. Among them was Dr. Andrew Stasko—a veteran himself—who served on the medical team. Near the end of the trip, Tank McNamara sat down with Dr. Stasko at the United States Navy Memorial to talk about his service and the medical team's role on the Honor Flight that helps keep the veterans safe.     Andrew Stasko, MD, MBA, FACS is the Interim Director of the Fargo VA Health Care System After an extensive career in the Air Force that included roles such as Chief of Surgery, Surgical Flight Commander, Chief of Staff, and Wing Inspector General, Dr. Stasko turned to private practice in 2003.  Dr. Stasko is board-certified in Surgery and has served as Deputy and Chief of Staff at CHI St. Francis in Breckenridge, MN.   Following his passion to serve Veterans, Dr. Stasko came to the Fargo VA as the Associate Chief of Staff for Surgical Care in April 2021.  Dr. Stasko is also the Clinical Champion for the Fargo VA at the center of VHA modernization efforts to transform into a High Reliability Organization (HRO).  Dr. Stasko graduated from the of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda MD in 1988 and later commissioned as a Medical Corps Officer in the United States Air Force later that same year. He separated at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Joel Heitkamp is on the Veterans Honor Flight in Washington, D.C., and sits down with Don Heit to talk about his service and the trip.  Don is from Grand Forks, ND and joined the Army in 1968 and served through 1970. He completed basic training in Fort Lewis, WA and was part of the 4th Inf. Div. while working his way to platoon sergeant. He spent a year in Vietnam and earned both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with V Device.  After getting out of the army, he worked for 38 years as an electrical lineman. He is a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Loughin, Nevada. 

Ryan Janke from KFGO News gets the opportunity to talk with Steve Hammond while on the Veterans Honor Flight in Washington, D.C.  He joined the Navy and began his service in 1968. After basic training, he was assigned to VAW-111 at North Island, California where he worked as an aviation electronics technician on E1-B aircraft. His time in the Navy concluded in 1973.  After the military, he was a law enforcement officer for many years.  He is a member of American Legion Post 30 in Fergus Falls and AMVETS. During a little down time on the shuttle bus, KFGO's Robbie Daniels had a chance to catch up with Bobby: Robert A. “Bobby” Johnson US Marine Corps CPL I was born and raised in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota – the only place I’d ever like to live! I joined the Marines and served from 1959 through 1962. When I was finished with basic training at Camp Pendelton, California, I was assigned as a field radio operator for the artillery, and manned at 105 Howitzer, with the 3rd Marine Div. 2nd Marine Div. in both Okinawa, Japan and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Graduating boot camp was one of the proudest moments of my life! After my discharge from the Corps, I worked hard and eventually worked my way up to being the district manager for a bread company. I now enjoy the slower pace of retired life.   My darling wife, Dianne, and I wed in 1963. We raised two children who would later give us five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. KFGO's Robbie Daniels & Her Husband, who was a volunteer, shared some great conversations with Leon. If you're wondering why he sounds so horse, Leon spent hours chatting with is fellow Veterans! Here's Robbie's conversation with Leon: Leon D. Schultz US Army PFC Leaf Valley, Minnesota is were I was raised and now I live just a stone’s throw down the road in Garfield. I volunteered for service to the Federal Reserve … and then it was off to the Army I went, serving from December 1957 through January 1959. I completed basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado and then was attached to the 281 Sub. Sup. Co. 7th Army. I worked in the warehouse in Heidelberg, Germany, receiving and distributing rations for our troops. I was the first person in my family to serve in the military. I’m forever proud of that. For the 40 years that followed my time in the Army, we were dairy farmers. We’ve now left the milking to others since we’re retired. My precious wife, Caroline, married me in 1964. We raised two incredible daughters and are now grandparents to six. In my spare time I enjoy fishing and hunting. Jerry and Sherry met, fell in love and got married while serving for the U.S. Army at Presidio Army Base in California. They were never able to have a First Dance. But thanks to a quick-thinking volunteer for the Honor Flight, they finally got their dance. Here's what they shared with KFGO's Robbie Daniels about that 1st Dance: 

Ryan Janke from KFGO News sits down with Rob Power while on the Veterans Honor Flight in Washington, D.C. Rob is originally from Hunter, ND, and now calls West Fargo home. He joined the Marines in February 1974 and stayed until February 1976. After his basic training in San Diego, CA, he spent time in the 3rd Marines, 9th Division in the 10B platoon. He was located in Okinawa, Japan.  After the Corps, he attended college at NDSU, graduated, and worked for Nodak Insurance. He was an agent there for 37 years before retiring in 2019. 

Dave shares his experience with KFGO's Robbie Daniels:  David A. “Dave” Essler US Army E-4 Brooten, Minnesota is where I grew up. I now live in Alexandria. I volunteered for the Army and served from January 1967 through January 1969. I spent my basic training time at Fort Lewis, Washington and then was connected to the 2nd Armored Div. where I was part of the infantry. Our unit saw time at Fort Hood, Texas; Munich, Germany; and Fort Riley, Kansas. Earning a perfect score on my physical fitness test three times was something very fun for me to achieve. When I was through with the military, I worked in construction and installing floor coverings for many years. I now enjoy the slower pace of the retired life to the fullest. I am a proud father of three wonderful sons, one of which is also in the military. My seven grandchildren mean so much to me, too. In my spare time I enjoy playing sports and traveling. KFGO's Robbie Daniels spoke with Wayne about his time spent in Italy: Wayne H. Sheilds US Air Force MSGT I come from Grand Forks, North Dakota and call the Moorhead, Minnesota area home today. I served in the Air Force from 1972 through 1992. After graduating basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, I in USAF Missile Maintenance as a supervisor/technician and ground launch Cruise Missile supervisor at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota; Vandenburg AFB, California; and Comiso AS, Italy. Being assigned to the 3901st Strategic Missile Evaluation Squadron Headquarters SAC was a favorite time for me.  After my time with the Air Force was through, I worked in the automotive industry for many years. I am now retired. My darling wife, Donna, and I were married in 1975. Our two children have blessed us with seven grandchildren to spoil. Cassatt US Air Force // SD National Guard E4 // E5 I come from Rogers, North Dakota and now call Lisbon home. I enlisted in the Air Force and served on active duty from February 1955 through June 1959. I spent basic training at San Antonio, Texas and would later link up with the 91st Air Wing where I worked in fire control and radar maintenance for the B-47 aircraft. I saw time in Colorado and overseas in Morocco. I loved all the activities in the Air Force and really enjoyed the work. After active duty, I went to college at Spearfish Teacher’s College, then earned my master’s degree from Northern Arizona University. I went on to earn my juris doctorate from the American Law College. For 31 years after, I taught law courses at the high school level before retiring. During that time, I was also a part of the Guard. My lovely wife, Lucy, and I raised four fantastic children. We’ve also been named grandparents seven times, great-grandparents nine times, and great-great-grandparents three times. I am a widower now and sure do miss my girl so much. KFGO's Robbie Daniels chats with Boyd, who has a great story about dancing:    Boyd L. “Ope” Oppegaard US Navy E-4 Erskine, Minnesota is where I was born, raised, and continue to live. I was originally drafted but chose to enlist in the Navy. I served for three years from July 1971 through July 1974. After completing basic training in San Diego, California, I was stationed aboard the USS Haleakala (AE25), porting out of Concord, California. I worked on the low- and high-pressure air compressors, hydraulic powered units, forklifts, and after steering watches while out to sea. I was very proud to have served my country and especially enjoyed sailing to other countries.  After the Navy, I returned to Minnesota and spent most of my working years with BNSF Railroad. I also continued to farm in my civilian years. I am now happily retired. My incredible wife, Julie, and I married in 1986. We have raised three children and are now grandparents to three more. I enjoy hunting, trapping, fishing, traveling, and putting on fish fry events at our local American Legion. I am a member of that same fish fry holding American Legion club, out of Gonvick. KFGO's Robbie Daniels, spoke with Bernie, next to the Vietnam Memorial Wall:   Bernard J. “Bernie” McKigney US Army // ND National Guard SP5 // 1SG I grew up in Dougherty, Iowa and now call Moorhead, Minnesota home. I was drafted by the Army and served on active duty from July 1968 through May 1970. After completing basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, I became an infantryman with the 11th Inf. Bde. Americal Div. We saw time in Vietnam; Fort Benning, Georgia; and Wurzburg, Germany. Surviving an explosion while in Vietnam and earning a Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal are things I’m so grateful for. After active duty, I taught music in the Pelican Rapids schools for eight years. I then joined the Guard, playing clarinet and serving as company clerk in the 188th Army Band. In 1978 I became the band’s full-time technician and would retire in 2003. I continued civilian work as a delivery driver and meter reader for Cass County Electric. I still work part-time for Menards and the Fargodome events. My wife and I married in 1970. I’ve been fortunate to be able to teach my niece and nephews in school over the years. I so enjoy music in my free time, both playing and directing for two Veterans Bands. I also enjoy working on our hobby farm near Middle River.  I am a member of the American Legion, VFW, DAV, Americal DIV, and VVA. While on the Veterans Honor Flight in Washington, D.C., Joel Heitkamp sits down with Einer "Phil" Wold.  Phil is from Grace City, ND and now calls Calvin his home. He served in the Marine Corps on active duty from 1966 through 1969. He served as a Motor Vehicle Operator in Chu Lai, Vietnam, and later was stationed at El Toro Air Base in California. After discharging from the Marines, he drove truck for the rest of his working days and is now happily retired.  Phil is a member of th Brumwell-Gray American Legion Post 276 in Sarles.

He was drafted by the Army and served from March 1968 through October 1969. When he finished basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne working as a medic. Joel sits down with Gary Guggenberger while in Washington, D.C. with the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN.  Gary grew up in Cold Spring, MN and now lives in Bemidji, MN. He joined the Army and served from 1968 through 1976. After completing basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he then spent time with the 1st Logistical Command 48th Group 6th Transportation Battalion 352nd Transportation Company. He saw time in Long Binh, Vietnam where he was a 5-ton truck driver. For four years, he was a prisoner of war, being released on February 12,1973. When he got out of the military, he moved to Colorado to become a fishery technician for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. He retired in 2002 after 26 years on the job.  He is a member of the VFW Post 1260, American Legion Post 14, DAV Chapter 7, and serves as the Bemidji Veterans Memorial Chairman.  If you would like to learn more or donate to the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN, you can check out their website here. 

Joel is joined by Gary "G-Man" Gullicks while in Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight.  Gary grew up in Palermo, ND and now lives in Grand Forks. He was drafted by the Army and was off to basic training in May 1968. He was assigned to Company C 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry, seeing time in Vietnam and completed his time with the military in 1969.  After he got out of the Army, he worked at the water treatment plant for years and is now retired.  He is a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the VFW in Westhope, the American Legion in Stanley, and the DAV in Minot. 

Joel Heitkamp joined the Veterans Honor Flight, and is joined by Bob Glen. Bob was born, raised, and still lives in Badger, MN. He was drafted in October 1966, and served until June 1968. He spent basic training at Fort Bliss, TX and worked as a bulldozer operator, clearing brush 100 meters wide on each side of the road. He was stationed in Bearcat, Vietnam.  After the Army, he farmed and was the head of maintenance at Badger Public Schools for 30 years.  Bob is a member of the American Legion, a life member of the VFW, and enjoys being part of the Military Honor Guard. 

Joel Heitkamp sits down with Wendell Affield while on the Veterans Honor Flight in Washington, D.C. Wendell grew up and still resides in Bemidji, MN. When he was 17 years old, he enlisted in the Navy and served from 1965 through 1969. He completed basic training in San Diego, CA, and served two years on the USS Rogers DD 876. In 1967, he transferred to the Mobile Riverine Force, which was a combined Army and Navy unit. In August 1968, he was wounded in an ambush and was medevacked home.  After his discharge from the Navy in 1969, he worked in a butcher shop. In 2001, he retired from that and began studying the writing craft at a university. He wrote his first book, "Muddy Jungle Rivers" about his time in Vietnam. He then wrote three more books dealing with mental health, PTSD, and familial relations.  He is a life member of the DAV, VVA, and MOPH. While on the Veterans Honor Flight in Washington, D.C., Joel is joined by Lanny Moore.  Lanny Moore grew up in Williston, ND and now lives in Grand Forks, ND. He was drafted by the U.S. Army and left home in July 1965. After graduating basic training, he joined the 1st Brigade 11th Aviation 162nd Assault Helicopter Company, and later with the 173rd Helicopter Company. In July 1967, his time was up with the Army and he headed back to the United States.  Once out of the Army, he attended Minot State University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts.  Learn more about the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN on their website. 

Joel is joined by Leo Ackerman while on the Veterans Honor Flight in April 2025.  Leo was born and raised in Hillsboro, ND and still lives there today. He joined the National Guard in 1965 and served until 1971. He spent his basic training at Fort Polk, LA and was then assigned to the 141st Engineering Battalion, Co. B. He was part of the team that built the runway at Hector International Airport in Fargo, ND.  After his discharge, he was a JD Mechanic and went into farming. While on the April 2025 Veterans Honor Flight, Joel sits down with Jim Hagen to talk about the flight and his service.  Jim is from Northwood, ND and still lives there today. He was drafted and then volunteered for the Air Force, and served from March 1971 through March 1975. He spent basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas, and was then assigned to the 319th at Grand Forks AFB. He worked on the Minuteman Missile System and Emergenc Maintenance Team while there. While on the April 2025 Veterans Honor Flight, Joel is joined by Warren Dunham.  Warren was born and raised in Ulen, MN, and now lives in Hawley. He was drafted by the Army and served from 1968 through 1969. After his discharge from the Army, he worked in dairy farming. He has been married to Susan since 1970, has three kids, and is a grandpa to seven grandchildren. Douglas martin grew up in Cogswell, ND and now lives in Milnor. He was drafted by the Army and served from September 1966 through September 1968. After his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, he was stationed in Vietnam where he worked as an artillery gunner. Douglas also earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during his service.  After his discharge from the Army, he went back to work for Bobcat for 38 years.  He is a member of VFW Post 6339 in Forman and the DAV. 

Bruce is a US Army Veteran that grew up in Enderlin, North Dakota and now lives in Fargo. He joined the Army and served from 1968 through 1969. After completing basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, he spent time with the 30th Artillery in Okinawa. From there, he was moved to the 199th Light Infantry in An Loc-Long Binh, Vietnam.  He is a member of the American Legion and serves in the post's Honor Guard as their Chaplain. 

Ryan Janke from KFGO News interviews Michael McCarthy while in D.C. on a Veterans Honor Flight. Michael grew up in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and now calls Moorhead home. He Served in the Navy from 1960 through 1963. When he was finished with basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois, he served on shore patrol and in personnel at Naval Air Station Atsugi, Japan.  After the Navy, we worked in law enforcement for 27 years. He is a member of American Legion Post 21 in Moorhead, Minnesota. 

Al grew up in Austin, Minnesota and now lives in Miltona. He was drafted by the Army in December 1961 and served for two years, with basic training spent at Fort Carson, Colorado. After his service, he returned to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator.  He is a member of the American Legion Post #87 in Alexandria and has been a Commander for the last 10 years. 

Adam grew up on a farm outside Fertile, Minnesota and now lives in Bemidji. He enlisted in the National Guard in March 1965 and remained in the service until March 1971. He graduated from basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana and then spent time as a rifle squad leader in Crookston. He also completed Cold Weather Operations Course at Fort Greeley, Alaska and was in the Honor Guard.  After his time in the Guard, he was a natural gas transmission compression and pipeline operator and heavy equipment operator for many years.

Russell is a U.S. Navy veteran, and grew up in and still lives in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He joined the Navy in April 1974 and served until April 1999, graduating from basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois. After basic training, he spent time in San Diego, California working as a mechanic aboard the USS Ajax AR6, EOD Model Unit, and USS George Phillips FF6-12. He spend a year and a half in the Persian Gulf and another year and a half involved in Desert Storm.  He is a member of the VFW, DAV, and Walk of Flags in Fergus Falls, and previously earned the Adjutant of the Year for the time spent with the DAV.

Joel Heitkamp is joined by James, Marvin, and Merton Hutchinson on the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN.  James "Jim" Hutchinson was in the Army for three years from 1962 through 1965. After basic training, he spent his days in service at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was assigned to the 1st Transportation Co. in Nuremberg, Germany. He was a truck driver and an M-14 rifle sharpshooter.  Marvin "Hutch" Hutchinson joined the Army and served from 1958 through 1962. He served as a combat engineer and a cook. The Army brought him to Camp Hovey, Korea, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and Delta Junction, Alaska. After the Army, he spent many years working as a trucker.  Merton Hutchinson joined the Minnesota National Guard in 1962 and served there until 1967. Once he finished basic training, he served in the Motor Division at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. He loved being a radio operator while in the service. He is a member of the American Legion in Middle River. 

Ryan Janke from KFGO News talks with Beth, the daughter of James L. Verwey. He's from Lakota, North Dakota, and now lives in Valley City. He joined the Army and served from 1970 through 1971 on active duty. He then spent another 34 years with the National Guard.  His daughter, Beth, talks about her experience as an escort for her dad on the Honor Flight trip to D.C.

Keith Keuhl is a US Army veteran that currently lives in Wahpeton and is from Hankinson, North Dakota. He enlisted and joined the Army in August of 1969, went overseas in 1970, came home in 1971, and got out in February of 1972. He graduated from basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and then spent time in Vietnam rebuilding and grading roads.  After the Army, he spent 40 years working as a truck driver.  He also talks to Joel about his son, David C. Kuehl, who was killed in Iraq in 2007 while serving his third tour of duty overseas. 

Joel Heitkamp gets the chance to talk with US Army veteran, Larry Milbrandt. Larry is from Hankinson, ND, and joined the Army in July 1961 and served until June 1963. Joel Heitkamp talks with Bruce Murphy. Bruce is a US Army veteran and currently resides in Hankinson, North Dakota. He joined the the Army in 1960 and ended his service in 1964. He attended basic training at Fort Ord, California and then spent time as an aircraft maintenance man in California, Alabama, New Mexico, Korea, and West Virginia. He even received a Letter of Commendation!  He is a member of American Legion Post 88 in Hankinson and VFW Post 9317 in Mantador, North Dakota. 

Harry Stenson was born in McVille, North Dakota and now calls West Fargo home. He was drafted by the Army in January 1959 and staying in through January 1961. He graduated from basic training at Fort Riley, Kansan and then spent time in the 2nd Inf. Div. where he worked as a Drill Sergeant in Fort Benning, Georgia.  After the Army, he worked as a high school teacher for 32 years. He is a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, and the DAV.

US Navy Veteran Arthur Saari grew up in Henning, Minnesota and still calls the area home. He joined the Navy in September 1961 and served until January 1966, joining at age 19. He completed basic training at San Diego, California and then spent time with VF211, Pacific Fleet, and aboard the USS Hancock. He worked as a jet machanic and was based out of Miramar, California.  After the Navy, he worked on a dairy farm for many years. He is a member of the VFW in Wadena and the DAV in Fergus Falls.
