In this episode of Very Bold Radio and Podcast, host Steve Teel reconnects with his high school classmate, former elite collegiate track and field coach, and executive Layne Anderson. What starts as a fun stroll down memory lane reflecting on their days growing up in Frankfurt, Germany, unfolds into a powerful testimony of life transformation, surrendering personal pride, finding work-life balance, and coming to Christ later in life.

Main Topics Covered

A Stroll Down Memory Lane: Steve and Layne reminisce about their high school days at Frankfurt American High School ("Bad V"), shared athletic memories, and unique experiences like Colin Powell’s helicopter landing on the school grounds.

The High Cost of Elite Athletics: Layne reflects on his 27-year career coaching track and field at powerhouse programs across the Big 12, Big 10, and SEC (including Texas Tech, Auburn, Iowa, and Tennessee). He opens up about how work had become the primary focus of his life at the severe expense of his family and marriage.

A Life-Changing Career Shift: After receiving a life-altering opportunity with the startup company Boost Treadmills while at the University of Tennessee, Lane made the bold decision to leave college coaching to prioritize being a present, active husband and father.

Faith Journey & Adult Baptism: Layne shares his transition from a traditional, routine-driven background in the Catholic church to finding a personal relationship with God at Shoreline Church. He details how worship music, Scripture, and the faith journey of his son, Sawyer, ultimately led him to surrender his anxieties and get baptized at age 59.

Key Takeaways

Prioritizing Family Over Ambition: Layne candidly discusses the regrets of letting career ambitions overshadow family milestones, noting that children grow up fast and highlighting the critical importance of dedicating time to your spouse and children.

It’s Never Too Late: Emphasizing a pivotal moment from his baptism testimony, Lane reinforces that no matter your age or external success, it is never too late to surrender your life to Christ, let go of self-reliance, and find true rest.

The Power of Community and Mentorship: Layne highlights the impact of Christian community, biblical mentorship, and being open to how God works through unexpected avenues—including music and the strong example of his son.
