The Police Ministry revealed in a parliamentary reply that IPID has a backlog of about 15 000 investigations into allegations of crime by police officers.  Gauteng is the province with the second highest number of outstanding investigations against police officers, However, it is the leading province in rape by a police officer, it also leads the other provinces by far when it comes to police corruption. “We need to ensure that the public has confidence in SA policing” – IPID tackles 15 000 investigations into crimes allegedly committed by police officers

KwaZulu-Natal police say a 22-year-old suspect who had been arrested for attempted murder was shot and killed after attacking officers inside the holding cells at Ntuzuma police station on Monday morning. Police say the suspect overpowered two officers, took keys to the main door and assaulted them before grabbing a firearm from responding officers and opening fire. Tactical teams later intervened and fatally wounded him. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Authorities say the situation was contained after several tense minutes. Suspect shot dead in Ntuzuma police cells shootout

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
