The two men who forced Victor Mlotshwa into a coffin and threatened to shoot him if he ran away have been denied bail by the Middelburg Magistrate's Court. Magistrate Jongilizwe Dumehleli ruled in the case against Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Martin-Jackson - the co-accused - in the so-called coffin assault case. The duo face charges of assault to cause grievous bodily harm, after they assaulted Mlotshwa and forced him into a coffin alive. The case will be back again in court on January 25th. Two men who forced Victor Mlotshwa into a coffin denied bail

KwaZulu-Natal police say a 22-year-old suspect who had been arrested for attempted murder was shot and killed after attacking officers inside the holding cells at Ntuzuma police station on Monday morning. Police say the suspect overpowered two officers, took keys to the main door and assaulted them before grabbing a firearm from responding officers and opening fire. Tactical teams later intervened and fatally wounded him. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Authorities say the situation was contained after several tense minutes. Suspect shot dead in Ntuzuma police cells shootout

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
