Six days left for South Africa's 7th democratic Parliament to be formed following the 2024 national general elections

There are only six days left for the 7th Parliament to be formed. Before a Government of National Unity or a coalition is formed, parliament must first be constituted within 14 days of the declaration of the election results. The election of the Speaker, Deputy and the President are critical to the formation of the National Assembly,  while the election of the President is critical to ensure the formation of a government. A quorum of 134 out of the 400 members of the National Assembly is required to elect the Speaker of parliament, Deputy or President. The election of these officials is done through a secret ballot only, if there are other candidates contesting the positions. A president-elect would cease to be a member of the Assembly once elected by the House.
