As South Africa marks 30 years of Democracy, SABC News has launched Democracy 30, a programme dedicated to marking this historic milestone. As with any new democracy, South Africa's education system has faced several challenges in the last 30 years. The Eastern Cape is one of the provinces that have borne the brunt of the country's inability to provide equal education for all learners, particularly those in rural areas. Apart from teaching and learning obstacles, some under-resourced schools in that province continue to battle the triple threat of overcrowding in classrooms, poor infrastructure and a persistent lack of ablution facilities.
