The South African Human Rights Commission has turned to the Constitutional Court to appeal a Supreme Court of Appeal judgment. The contested ruling states that SAHRC recommendations are not binding, and can only be enforced by a court of law.  The SAHRC argues that if not challenged, the ruling will render the Chapter 9 body useless. Police say the illegal miners in Stilfontein, in the North West, are not trapped underground by are rather trying to avoid arrest from the police. The police insist that they will not tolerate criminality while the miners continue to beg for food and water to be let into he mine. The standoff between the two was triggered to police's operation Vala Mgodi which blocked the supply of foods and water underground. Police say the remain on standby to arrest or assist those who need medical attention. National police spokesperson, Brigadier, Athlenda Mathe explains. "In 2021, (the bodies of ) 18 ghost (miners) surfaced. They were neatly wrapped-up like Christmas presents" - Bench Marks Foundation says mining companies turn blind eye to illegal operations underground.

The president has promised to continue to push for the interests of the developing South countries. Meanwhile, the president of the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP 29, Mukhtar Babayev, has warned that initiatives to mitigate the effects of climate change could stall if governments refuse to compromise.
