Residents win fight to be refunded unlawfully charged property rates

View descriptionShare

Earlier this month , the Pretoria High Court ordered the city of Tshwane to refund  thousands of ratepayers monies owed to them after the city charged higher tariffs and increased bills without notification. A group of residents won their fight to be refunded unlawfully charged property rates dating back to 2011. Some owners say they were shocked in September of 2012 when their monthly rates bills increased by about 700%. The court order comes as the metro is battling a severe liquidity crisis. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Lex Middelberg , founder and representative  of the Republican Conference of Tshwane on the organisation's reaction to the court order
