Riverlea residents, South of Johannesburg say their plea for police visibility in the area seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane has opened an investigation into the injury to a SAPS K9 at one of the service’s training and veterinary facilities. The exact extent of K9 Sky’s injuries is not clear at this stage; however, Sky is currently receiving veterinary care. The Acting National Commissioner has directed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including Sky’s accommodation, supervision, care and compliance with applicable procedures and standards. The family of the late Black Consciousness Movement leader, Steve Biko, has welcomed the Gqeberha High Court's ruling to temporarily halt inquest proceedings into his death. The family filed an urgent application to halt proceedings in order to obtain critical affidavits and documents from the 1977 inquest and the archives of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This was intended to afford the family sufficient time to adequately prepare for cross examination of the witnesses and persons of interest in the inquest.
