The Dr Harry Surtie Hospital in Upington, in the Northern Cape has been plagued by complaints of poor service delivery. The air conditioning system at the hospital has reportedly been broken for some time, leading to some patients showing symptoms of heat stroke. Sources inside the hospital say there are concerns that medication will be spoiled because of the high temperature and lack of cooling infrastructure. Crèches also increased their fees by 6%. Meanwhile, university boarding costs soared even higher, with an 8.2% jump compared to 2023. The release of matric results can be a trigger for depression and anxiety in students, and in some cases may lead to suicidal thoughts. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has also  noticed an increase in matric learners seeking assistance, and urges students to reach out if they are feeling overwhelmed. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Dr Sanele Gamede, a Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg and founder of #MatricsUngazibulali, a program that advises matriculants who did not perform as well as they would like options of 2nd chances to eventually achieve their goals

The Limpopo Department of Health says two nurses have been raped while working the night shift at the Ga-Chuene clinic, outside Polokwane in Limpopo. Health spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana says a heavily armed man entered the clinic shortly after midnight. The suspect then allegedly overpowered security personnel and abducted two nurses.
