Human Rights Watch is calling on Senegal to end its crackdown on LGBT people, warning that the country's laws raise questions about its compliance with the Olympic Charter ahead of hosting the Youth Olympic Games. In March, Senegal passed legislation doubling the maximum prison sentence for same-sex relations to ten years. In August, 71 men were referred for trial on charges of so-called "acts against nature", a term used to describe same-sex relations.
Senegal is due to make history later this month when it becomes the first African country to host an Olympic sporting event, welcoming around 2,700 young athletes for the Youth Olympic Games.

The ANC says it is not seeking any indulgence or special treatment from the court, but simply asks that its compliance be assessed in accordance with the law. The party seeks to appeal the Electoral Court's decision, which ruled in favour of the IEC to bar the 181 councillors. The ANC failed to submit 181 candidates for six municipalities before the IEC's 5pm deadline on 28 August.
