A twenty-four year-old-rape suspect is under police guard in Tonga hospital after being beaten by community members for allegedly raping two six year old girls. It is alleged that the two girls would be raped during the day by the suspect when there is no one at home. The rape was happening continuously with the man giving the children R5 to shut them up. Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Suspended SAPS Organized Crime Head Richard Shibiri says he did not get himself involved but was tasked by General Shadrack Sibiya to find out what charges Katiso KT Molefe was arrested on. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
