The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy says it is currently too risky to dispatch a search team to ventilation Shaft 5 at the Virginia mine in Welkom, following information that 31 alleged illegal Basotho miners died at the shaft. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Kingdom of Lesotho has informed the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy that the incident took place on 18 May 2023 in a shaft that was last operational in the 1990s. Gauteng Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, presenting the crime statistics for Gauteng for the first quarter of the 2026 financial year. Kekana says overall contact crime in Gauteng decreased by three percent during the first quarter. However, attempted murder, assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and common assault increased. Kekana revealed Gender-based violence and femicide cases declined by 9.1 percent, while property-related crime fell by 2.7 percent.
