Phalatse's appointment marked the second major blow to the ANC, which also lost the City of Ekurhuleni, where the DA's Tania Campbell, beat the ANC's outgoing city mayor Mzwandile Masina. In Ethekwini, the inaugural council meeting was postponed after police had into interveen after a group of alleged ANC supporters disrupted the meeting.
