Johannesburg High Court buckles under heavy case backlog with cases waiting 5 years to reach trial

The Deputy Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Aubrey Ledwaba has pointed to concerning delays in the flow of court cases in the city of Johannesburg, with the earliest available trial dates in the Johannesburg High Court being as far away as October 2029. Ledwaba was speaking on the case flow turnaround times for matters in Johannesburg as at the 31st of August 2024, which indicates that those seeking to access justice are often forced to wait almost 5 years in order for their cases to get to trial.
