The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union, POPCRU, has called for a full investigation into top prison officials at the Mangaung Correctional Facility following the escape of the notorious so-called Facebook rapist, Thabo Bester. Police have confirmed that a manhunt is currently underway for the convicted rapist and murderer after he escaped fromhis prison cell. The cell was set alight, in what was initially thought to be a suicide. A subsequent autopsy failed to match the DNA of the dead body to that of Bester. Investigative Journalist says Thabo Bester escape is proof that high-level corruption at Mangaung Correctional Facility

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Suspended SAPS Organized Crime Head Richard Shibiri says he did not get himself involved but was tasked by General Shadrack Sibiya to find out what charges Katiso KT Molefe was arrested on. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
