A concerning figure of almost one quarter of South Africa's households, representing 22.2 percent, consider their access to food as inadequate or severely inadequate, a 4 percentage points higher than in 2019 before the outbreak of COVID-19. This is according to the findings of Statistics South Africa's General Household Survey for 2024 release yesterday. The data also indicate that between 2003 and 2024, the percentage of individuals who benefited from social grants increased from 12,8 percent to 40 percent. The survey was conducted from more than twenty thousand households, between January and December 2024. Households with inadequate or severely inadequate access to food rise by 4%

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Suspended SAPS Organized Crime Head Richard Shibiri says he did not get himself involved but was tasked by General Shadrack Sibiya to find out what charges Katiso KT Molefe was arrested on. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
