The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group's Household Affordability Index has noted increases in items including maize meal (2%), rice (3%), chicken livers (2%) & white bread (3%) in July 2024. The index has revealed a 5% or more, increase in the prices for basic food items such as samp (6%), eggs (5%), and green pepper (6%). The community of Eldorado Park, in Johannesburg, has called for government to intervene in what locals have called the triple threat of rampant drug abuse, crime and unemployment. The community is currently engaging the top brass of national police, in a ministerial imbizo that aims to shine a light on crime prevention in the area. The officials, led by Deputy Minister, Cassel Mathale, have convened at a local community centre, where they aim to create a platform for effective interaction between police leadership and communities. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Deputy Chairperson of the Eldorado Park Community Policing Forum, Dominique Palmer.

Al Ahly has been granted full-capacity approval for the match. Egyptian authorities have capped attendance at CAF matches to a maximum of 30,000 fans.  But Al Ahly appealed to their Ministry of Sport after their officials emphasised the significance of the match and the potential impact of an electrifying crowd on the outcome. As a result, the Cairo International Stadium will host a capacity crowd of 75,000 fans for this high-stakes encounter. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC Sports News Anchor, Jon Gericke

The author of two books on the life and death of former ANC President, Chief Albert Luthuli is expected to continue his testimony today, at the Pietermaritzburg High Court. During his testimony yesterday, Jabulani Mzaliya described Luthuli as a unifier, adding that the late leader wore many hats, including those of a Christian, a politician , a farmer and a father. The academic is testifying in the inquest into the circumstances surrounding Luthuli's death in July 1967, reportedly after he was struck by a goods train. .
