The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group's Household Affordability Index has noted increases in items including maize meal (2%), rice (3%), chicken livers (2%) & white bread (3%) in July 2024. The index has revealed a 5% or more, increase in the prices for basic food items such as samp (6%), eggs (5%), and green pepper (6%). Electricity and Energy minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa  says there will be no extension for prepaid electricity consumers to re-code their meter should they fail to do it by the 24th of November. Economists have welcomed the latest drop in consumer price inflation which is a a four year low from three-point-eight percent in September to two-point-eight in October 2024. The CPI now stands at its lowest since June 2020 during the COVID 19 pandemic when the rate was two-point-two percent. Falling fuel prices remain the primary factor behind the slowdown. The local authorities have engaged with the households instructing them to vacate the place since it is dangerous to have structures built on top of the pipeline.
