The briefing has put operational issues and challenges relating to reported intimidation and extortion under the spotlight. Gauteng taxi industry condemn acts of violence in the e-hailing industry

President Cyril Ramaphosa says gender-based violence is a betrayal of the South Africa's constitution. This is as the country is plagued by gendered discrimination which manifest in many ways, most notably as violence against women. Ramaphosa says in recent years, government has worked together with other stakeholders to fight gender-based violence and femicide. Through strategic national plans, government has introduced new laws that protect survivors of GBV that improves the response of the police and ensure harsher sentences to perpetrators. Ramaphosa was speaking at the official National Women's Day celebration in Pofader, in the Northern Cape province.

There continues to be widespread reaction to the case involving one of Miss South Africa's contestants for the upcoming annual pageant set to take place on Saturday evening. This follows the announcement by the Home Affairs department which notes that the person recorded in its records as Chidimma Adetshina's mother may have committed fraud and identify theft. Adetshina's entry to the pageant caused a social media storm as it is understood her father is Nigerian while her mother may be from Mozambique. Here is the Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber explaining that the 23-year-old's mother may have some questions to answer to. Government says its contingent liabilities emanating from court cases stood at 21-billion rand, by the end of March last year. This is according to the minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntsavheni, in a written parliamentary reply. This is the money government envisions to pay for pending legal costs. While it is not unusual for government's to have to make provision for contingent liabilities, some have argued that this amount is quite substantial. Zalene Merrington reports...
