Gauteng Education MEC says department did not approve discipline camp for Daveyton Skills School where two learners with special needs died

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane says the camping trip where two learners drowned at the Hennops river in Centurion, Pretoria on Monday, was not authorised by the department. Two learners, aged 13 and 16, from Daveyton Skills School in Ekurhuleni, were attending a discipline camp organised by non-government organisation ,Rising Stars Generation. 90 special needs learners were part of the excursion. None of the teachers were part of the camp and learners we only accompanied by a social worker with no life jacket. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane , who says the district office was never notified by the school of such a trip.
