Five men accused of beating and burning to death seven people in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg are expected to apply for bail today in the Randburg Magistrate's Court. The accused face five counts of murder and attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and malicious damage to property. One of the accused is facing a further charge of contravening the Immigration Act. The seven people were killed in an alleged mob attack incident earlier this month. During a previous court appearance the spouse of one of the accused - who wished to remain anonymous - expressed her disappointment at the postponement of the matter

Five men accused of beating and burning to death 7 suspected criminals in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, apply for bail

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Suspended SAPS Organized Crime Head Richard Shibiri says he did not get himself involved but was tasked by General Shadrack Sibiya to find out what charges Katiso KT Molefe was arrested on. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
