In a major boost for communities battered by gang violence and crime, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in his State of the Nation Address that he's deploying the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to support police in Gauteng and the Western Cape. This targets gangsterism in Cape Town's hotspots and illegal mining syndicates terrorizing areas in Gauteng. Residents in gang-infested neighborhoods have welcomed the move, saying police are overwhelmed and urgent help is needed to reclaim streets and restore safety. Cape Crime Crisis Needs More Than Soldiers

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Suspended SAPS Organized Crime Head Richard Shibiri says he did not get himself involved but was tasked by General Shadrack Sibiya to find out what charges Katiso KT Molefe was arrested on. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
