 A 31-year old Zimbabwean national is currently appearing before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's court in connection with the dramatic prison escape of murderer, Thabo Bester. He is the ninth suspect in the matter and is facing a charge of assisting an inmate to escape from lawful custody. Gauteng Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, presenting the crime statistics for Gauteng for the first quarter of the 2026 financial year. Kekana says overall contact crime in Gauteng decreased by three percent during the first quarter. However, attempted murder, assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, and common assault increased. Kekana revealed Gender-based violence and femicide cases declined by 9.1 percent, while property-related crime fell by 2.7 percent.
