The Balobedu Royal Family is allegedly taking President Cyril Ramaphosa to court to challenge his decision to recognise Masalanabo Modjadji as Queen Modjadji of the Balobedu royal nation. This follows the Presidency's announcement last Friday, stating that the government recognised the Balobedu queenship on 31 March 2016 under the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act, making it the only legally recognised queenship in the country. Her initial recognition took place at the minor age of 10-years-old but her maternal uncle, held the fort for her as a Regent as she could not legally ascend the throne until she turned 18. In a statement, the Presidency says the legal recognition of Queen Modjadji VII introduces a new chapter and is a moment of great significance to the rich history of Balobedu Nation.
