700 US Marines sent to Los Angeles to support National Guard deployment amid protests

View descriptionShare

A battalion of 700 US Marines is being sent to Los Angeles to support a National Guard deployment of up to 4 000 troops to protect federal property amid immigration-related protests that have at times turned violent. President Donald Trump authorized an additional 2 000 troops, doubling the National Guard deployment over the objections of state and local politicians. In a statement on X, California Governor Gavin Newsom said Marines should not be deployed on American soil facing their own countrymen to fulfill the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial President. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports on the tense scenes that continue to play themselves out both on the streets of LA and in the burgeoning  political standoff between Washington and California.
