The summer after Deirdre Jacob turned 18, she disappeared in broad daylight, outside her own front gate. The year was 1998 and Deirdre was the seventh woman to vanish without a trace in Leinster in just five years.
Ireland’s vanishing triangle of more than 12 missing and murdered women across the 1980s and 1990s was finally taken seriously by Gardai when Deirdre disappeared. Her case was the catalyst that led to multiple searches, a number of arrests, amid efforts to seek justice for so many missing or murdered Irish women.
But despite the impact Deirdre's case had, she has never been found. In part one of our series on the murder of Deirdre Jacob, we meet Deirdre and track what happened on that sunny July afternoon on the outskirts of Newbridge.
