View descriptionShare

Often, American history is taught through stories of tragedy and heroism. The same could be said for the history of Africans in the United States. Our history is usually reduced to a few political heroes and their tragic endings. This style of storytelling often erases local movements and the conditions that created them. It erases the mentors, followers, and meetings. This hinders us from critically analyzing the past and instead leaves us with nostalgia. That nostalgia leaves us longing for a past that never existed as it was taught. It produces the thought that we NEED another Malcolm or Martin. Tonight, we recontextualize Martin, Malcolm, and the movements that made them.
