From Shark Attacks to Saving Lives: Danny Schouten’s Mission

Danny Schouten is the founder of Community Shark Bite Kits and a nominee for the 2027 NSW Young Australian of the Year.

After a friend survived a shark attack thanks to a makeshift tourniquet made from a dog lead, Danny realised beaches needed better emergency equipment.

He created specialised first-aid kits designed to help people control severe bleeding while waiting for emergency services to arrive. The kits include tourniquets, bandages, dressings and clear instructions on how to use them.

Danny spends his weekends putting the kits together, and they’re now installed at more than 330 beaches across Australia. His goal is to see every beach in the country equipped with one, potentially saving lives when every second counts.
