PLENARY INDULGENCE DURING JUBILEE “YEAR OF ST. FRANCIS” 2026

General Info: An Indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church (by merits of Jesus Christ) to remove the temporal punishment due to sin (already forgiven). A Plenary[1] Indulgence removes all temporal debt; a partial indulgence only some. One offering a plenary indulgence should move in a spirit of charity and foster detachment from all sin (most challenging condition); if not, the act or work becomes partial. Intention to gain a plenary indulgence can be for oneself or a deceased[2] person.

 

Hardly can one conceive of a greater act of charity than a Plenary Indulgence. To fulfill, aside from (1) Work performed, there must be (2) Reception of Holy Communion, ideally on same day, (3) Prayers for the Intentions of the Pope (such as Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be), and (4) Confession, 20 days before or after (though one must be in state of grace at time of indulgence performed).

 

While Enchiridion lists many Partial & Plenary Works, common Works enabling daily Plenary include:
    Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for at least one half an hour (n. 3);
    Devout reading of the Sacred Scriptures for at least one half an hour (n. 50);
    The pious exercise of the Way of the Cross (n. 63);
    Recitation of Marian Rosary in a church/oratory OR in a family group or religious society (n. 48).

 

SPECIAL PLENARY INDULGENCE DURING “YEAR OF ST. FRANCIS”

 

(While 1969 directives from Enchiridion remain in effect) “The Apostolic Penitentiary, through Decree issued, in accordance with the Supreme Pontiff, on the occasion of the Year of Saint Francis, grants a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer according to the intentions of the Holy Father),… to all the faithful without distinction who, with a heart detached from sin, participate in the Year of Saint Francis:

 

by [1] visiting, in the form of a pilgrimage, any Franciscan conventual church or place of worship anywhere in the world dedicated to Saint Francis or connected to him for any reason, and there devoutly [2] follow the Jubilee rites or spend at least a reasonable period of time in pious meditation and [3] raise prayers to God so that, following the example of Saint Francis, feelings of Christian charity towards their neighbors and authentic vows of harmony and peace among peoples may spring forth in their hearts, [and] [4]
    concluding with the Our Father, the Creed and
    invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare and all the Saints of the Franciscan Family.

 

The elderly, the sick and those who take care of them, and all those who are unable to leave their homes for serious reasons may also obtain a plenary indulgence, provided they detach themselves from any sin and intend to fulfil the three usual conditions as soon as possible, if they unite themselves spiritually to the jubilee celebrations of the Year of Saint Francis, offering to the Merciful God their prayers, the pains or sufferings of their lives.”
