The federal indictment of Donald Trump has prompted anger over the double standard employed by the Department of Justice. Trump followers see this as an extension of nearly seven years of politicized prosecutions, starting with the two-year Russia collusion hoax. The federal indictment of a political rival to a sitting president is not just unprecedented, but portends an endless cycle of vendettas in the years ahead.

Republican primary contenders have raised all of these concerns. One, however, has a plan to break that cycle and depoliticize law enforcement. A well-timed leak from the Ron DeSantis campaign reveals the Florida governor’s plan to decentralize and relocate the Department of Justice to keep the Beltway from unduly influencing its operation. DeSantis also plans to reorganize the FBI and to rid the bureau of its most political actors.

It needs to be more fully developed, but it’s the first substantive policy solution to this crisis.

Republicans can—and should—choose to solve the problem rather than perpetuate the cycle of vengeance.

America needs a fresh start.
