Donald Trump has promised to close the Department of Education. It’s about time.
Despite spending hundreds of billions since its founding in 1979, student test scores have gone down.
If we’re going to do right by America’s children, serious reforms are in order. It’s time to get education policy out of Washington and into laboratories of experimentation in the states.
The left claims that more spending will fix education. That’s just not true. In New York, they spend the most — thirty thousand dollars per child—but only 33 percent of students are reading proficient. In Florida, they spend ten thousand dollars per child but 80 percent are reading proficient.
Federal regulations and oversight won’t improve education. Experimentation, state and local control — and above all, parental choice — is the way to prepare our children for lives of dignity and fulfillment.
It’s time for serious and substantive reform.
